Monash Table Tennis Club Dominates VUG singles

On the 3rd of May, the Monash University Table Tennis team competed in the singles event of the Victorian University Games. The tournament featured participants from RMIT, Swinburne, Melbourne and Monash Univiersities.
Played in two stages, the tournament featured a group round followed by a knockout round. There were eight groups of (mostly) five players, and the top player would progress through to the 1st division knockout, the second player to 2nd division and the third players to the 3rd division.
First matches began at 9am with most of the team arriving around 8:30 to warm up before being put into groups. Four players from the sixteen person team progressed into Division 1 from the ground round. After a break for lunch players continued on to the knockout round where three of the four Monash students progressed into the semi-finals.
Monash dominated the tournament with Frank Gu winning 4-1 in the first semi final, progressing to the finals. Meanwhile, Monash's Paul Riha and Tom Li faced off in the other semi-final match with Paul winning after a close game 4-2, advancing into the finals.
After the completion of the Division 2 and 3 finals, a crowd had accumulated eager to watch the Division 1 finals between our two Monash students. Frank Gu and Paul Riha faced off with Frank scoring the first two sets and Paul pushing hard to even the score. Frank decisively captured the next step, leading the crowd to think the match was over however Paul managed to rally and win the next set evening the score once again to three all. After a gripping seventh set, Paul came out the final victor at 4-3 leading Monash to gain the VUG singles title from Swinburne University.
Monash's VUG singles win is a great start to the year and a fantastic sign for the upcoming AUG and VUG teams event.
